About Candlemas Day

Epiphany (sometimes known as “Little Christmas”) is a Christian feast day that celebrates the visit of the “Three Wise Man” and the manifestation and revelation of Jesus Christ.

This holiday marks the end of Christmas (12th Day of Christmas) and is celebrated by people around the world in various ways. One of the most common traditions is to make and serve Rosca de Reyes also known as the King’s Cake. This is an oval-shaped pastry which is decorated with colorful fruits to represent the Kings Crown. The cake is baked with little baby shaped figurines which represents the time when Baby Jesus was hidden by Joseph and Mary from Herod. According to tradition, when the cake is given to guests, the person who receives the baby figurine must host a presentation of Baby Jesus on Candlemas Day which falls on 2 February, also known as Día de la Candelaria.

On February 2 every year, Candlemas (also spelled as “Candlemass“) is celebrated as a popular holiday by Christians. Candlemas also known as the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, Candlemas, Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary (in Spanish “Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria”). It falls on the 40th day of Christmas.

The Candlemas celebration is held in various ways to honor purification of Mary and presentation of Jesus at the temple, which takes place 40 days after Christmas. Christians on this day may bring candles to their Church to be blessed and used throughout the year. The light from the candles represents the light of baby Jesus, which is symbolic as Jesus Christ is referred to as the “Light of the World”.
